In continuing with our theme this February of Clearwater love stories, this week we are interviewing an international couple with a big announcement to share…
Hanna grew coming to Clearwater Forest every summer as a camper, which made the decision easy for her to spend the summer of 2012 as a staff member. Sebastian came all the way from England that summer to join her as part of Clearwater’s International staff. Neither of them were coming to camp that summer expecting to find love, but fate had a different plan for these two.
“I thought she was beautiful and fun to talk to,” Sebastian recalls. “I thought he was hilarious and thoughtful…and his British accent didn’t hurt!” she chimes in.
“Neither one of us were planning on finding love, but I think working together in nature has a special effect on you,” Hanna says.
After spending two summers in a row working together on staff, the couple decided to give long distance a try. They give partial credit for the success of their relationship to the encouragement and support they received from their Clearwater community.
“Unfortunately we were from two different countries and didn’t know how a relationship would work, but we gave it a go!”
The couple was long distance for four years before they were married in the pavilion at Clearwater Forest in 2016. Today they are living happily together in the UK and expecting their first baby – a boy! – arriving in June!
In the spirit of Valentine’s Day, we asked the couple a few questions about their time at Clearwater and relationship advice.
What is your favorite memory at Clearwater?
A few of our favorite memories from camp are watching the sunsets during evening worship and simply being in a community of close friends.
Favorite Clearwater game or activity?
Our favorite camp activities are kayaking on the lake and playing Mighty Mighty Scoop Noodle Challenge!
What do you think makes Clearwater such a special place?
The thing that makes Clearwater so special is that it provides a place for people to connect with God and each other in a beautiful, natural environment. Clearwater will always feel like a place that is safe and full of laughter and memories.
What is one piece of advice you’d give to other couples about keeping your relationship thriving?
A bit of advice we would give to other couples is to put God and each other first before anything else in your life. No matter how busy you are, make time to do things together. Choose to love each other even in the imperfect moments, and your relationship will only grow.
Thank you Hanna & Sebastian for sharing your love story!
